What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is a type of direct or indirect online marketing that uses email to send commercial messages. Marketing emails can be sent to an individual, list group, company partners, and affiliates.
Although email marketing started as early as the 1970s it is still one of the most profitable ways to market your business today.
Email marketing is easy to set up and optimizes for the best Returns On Investment (ROI) in both the long term and the short term.
How does email marketing grow your business?
Email marketing is effective in building a strong relationship with your target audience. This is especially helpful when selling products or services that can be considered ‘High Ticket’ or expensive.
In the digital world, it is important to build trust with your prospects.
The reason for this is very simple: with all the online competition, fake news, misleading advertisements, and scammers trust has become the number one commodity when doing business online.
In fact, trust is so important in doing an online business that you will not get a single sale or client unless they have at least some level of trust in you even if you are offering something at an extremely low and discounted price.
With email marketing, you are able to build trust with your audience and prospects in a safe and convenient way.
After building trust with them you can move forward with closing the sale or client on one of your many products or services that they need.
In this post, we will explore some of the ways that you can use email marketing to build trust with your audience as well as 15 powerful email marketing conversion tips to get the best out of your email marketing efforts and grow your business.
We have also created a post to give you 22 ways that email marketing can benefit your business and help you to grow. You can find that post at 22 Powerful Email Marketing Benefits To Grow Your Business.
Email Marketing vs. Other Online Marketing – Which is better?
Many business owners are wondering if email marketing is still a profitable way to promote their company.
The answer is yes, but it does take some work on the part of both the content creator and your audience.
One of the major ways that email marketing can be considered better than other marketing channels such as Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns and social media marketing is because of its price.
Email marketing is considerably cheaper than any online advertising campaign you will run.
To get started with email marketing you only need to grow your email list and send your email subscribers frequent, helpful emails that will:
- Build trust with them
- Demonstrate your knowledge and authority around a certain topic or problem they might be faced with
- Establish yourself as their trusted and qualified friend and expert who can help them solve their problems.
In doing this email marketing has the potential for massive Returns On Investment.
That is because by building this relationship over time you will have built up a loyal base of subscribers and fans who not only trust you and love you but also want to spend their money with you at every turn.
After all, you have been helping them all along for free so they trust you more than they trust anyone else.
Another way that email marketing is helpful for you and your business compared to other traditional means is that you own your email list – i.e the list of people who have subscribed to your email newsletters.
But, hold on. Don’t I also own my subscribers on YouTube or followers on Instagram and Facebook?
Technically, you don’t. I would say you’ve only rented them – at best.
That means that at any time Facebook, YouTube, or any owner of these platforms may decide to remove your posts and content for policy violations (even if you really haven’t violated any policy and are practicing Free Speech by voicing your thoughts and opinions) or removing your account entirely.
What’s worse is that they quite often reduce the reach of your posts when their platforms have ‘matured.’
Are you looking to get more leads and sales from your website? Download our free eBook to learn how to instantly boost your website conversions and read our blog post on the 10 Worst Reasons Your Website Isn’t Converting its visitors into email subscribers and customers.
You’ve seen this happen time and time again where your posts aren’t getting as many views, likes, comments, and shares as they once did even though you are posting the same thing you used to post all along.
This usually happens after the platform gets popular and reaches a large user base.
At this stage, you might be thinking – but I paid a lot of money and spent a lot of time building this following and audience. They can’t just take it!
To that, I say – Build an email list!
You own your list and only you through spamming and poor and salesy emails can sabotage your ability to monetize that list at any time.
In other words with an email list you will not face any of the problems mentioned above.
How do I get started with email marketing?
Email marketing is a relatively easy way to reach an audience and grow your business.
To get started with email marketing you will need an email marketing provider like:
- Active Campaign
- Constant Contact
- Mailchimp
- FluentCRM (one of the best available for WordPress)
When you get an account with one of these email providers it would be helpful if you had a website to drive subscribers from but it is not absolutely necessary.
Check out this article we wrote to learn if your business needs a website. You can also check out our Cyber Sites Online Presence service to get a fully managed website with a 12-month marketing strategy complete with lead generation and email marketing capabilities for as low as $1,200 per month. Learn more about Cyber Sites here.
What you should do is to set up your account and create your first list for general subscribers.
You will be given an ‘opt-in’ email URL to share with potential subscribers so they can sign up to your list.
You should share this URL with everyone in your current audience. Share it with your audience subscribers on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Linked In, Clubhouse, etc.
By sharing it with this audience and having even a small percentage like 10% or 20% of their signup to your email you will be at a huge advantage because now you have multiple ways of contacting your audience.
Additionally, you will not be limited to any other platform that can restrict and remove you at any time.
Now that you have an email list that is growing with subscribers each day you will need to provide helpful content to them.
This content will build a relationship with them and bring them to the point where they trust you enough to do business with you and become long-term and loyal customers and clients.
7 Tips to produce helpful email content that drives sales and build a stronger relationship with subscribers
To get started producing helpful email content that resonates with your subscribers and builds trust you need to ask yourself some questions like:
- What do customers want?
- What are the most popular products or services that people purchase from you?
- How can they learn more about your company?
- What are some of the problems that keep them up at night?
- What is the best way I can serve them?
- How can I make their life easier?
- What kind of content do they resonate with the most?
On top of all this, it is mighty helpful to ask your email subscribers a question about their experience on a topic you’ve just talked to them about and read all the replies.
This will give you a treasure trove of information on which you can do further research and offer helpful content – all by listening to their concerns and answering their questions.
Another way that you can get started with offering helpful email content is by asking your audience at the end of your mails:
- What are some of the problems they face in this area?
- What are some topics they need more knowledge on or have trouble understanding?
- Even by asking what are the topics you can provide more meaningful content on.

How much money can I make from email marketing?
We’ve already discussed the advantages of using email marketing. We’ve looked at two of the major reasons why it’s more profitable and better to build an email list than to build up your social media following.
But you know what they say, right? Talk is cheap. Show me the money!
It is widely believed that you should average, at the very least, a dollar per month for every email subscriber you have.
That means that if you have a list of 400 people then you should average a return of $400 per month on that list.
If you have 15,000 email subscribers or even over 100,000 (yes, your list can be that big!) subscribers then you should average around $15,000 and $100,000 per month for each of those lists.
Additionally, the average Return On Investment (ROI) for each email campaign that you run should be about $42.
That means that for every $1 you invest into an email marketing campaign you should earn $42.
I bet at this stage you’re doing the rough numbers in your head and realized that it simply means that if you invest $1,000 in your email marketing efforts then you should see an average return of $42,000.
I put in $1,000 and make $42,000?
That’s preposterous and misleading! I can’t believe that!
Well, you see I dare to say that you can make even more from your efforts if you have the right system in place.
We have broken down this system that can help you more than 10x the returns you experience per subscriber for your email marketing campaigns in another post.
We have given you the system and a worked example of how those numbers would work.
If you would like to learn more about how you can earn more from your email subscribers then go ahead and read this article on 1 Powerful Marketing Strategy For Small Businesses And Startups that will help you achieve just that.
You can also check out this article we wrote to get more information on how to use email marketing to consistently generate leads for your business. The article is available at 16 Powerful Email Marketing Lead Generation Strategies.
A word of caution though, and this is my honest opinion based on experience in business as well as marketing – how much money you earn from your email list depends on you. It can be significantly north or south of $1 per subscriber each month and $42 for every dollar invested.
It all depends on the relationship you build with subscribers and the value you provide.
If you treat them well, offer massive value, and sell at the right times with irresistible offers then you can make well over $42 per dollar invested.
Conversely, if you only sell to your audience, harras and spam them with ads and irrelevant content, and never interact with them and answer them then I reckon you will struggle to make even $0.01 per email subscriber.
In business, the amount of money you earn depends greatly on the value you provide. Email marketing is just a small part of doing business so do it right and enjoy the rich rewards.
How can I start making money from my email list today?
Do you currently have an email list that you would like to monetize and start earning money from? It doesn’t have to be a list of even 100 subscribers.

15 Powerful Email Marketing Tips To Grow Your Business
No. 1 Make Signing Up Easy
You should make it as easy as possible to sign up to your email list.
It is often good practice to include a double opt-in to your list to block out spammers and bots. That’s perfectly fine and doesn’t have to interfere with making it easy for subscribers to sign up to your list.
Instead, what you should focus on is making your email subscriber form be as easy to understand and sign up for.
The more fields you require to be completed on any form the more conversions will plummet.
So, in the spirit of an easy email subscribing process you should only ask for 2 fields; name and email address.
A third field is optional such as the type of news you would like to receive. This helps with segmentation which brings us to the next point.
No. 2 -Segment Your List To Provide The Best Value To The Right People
Segmenting your email list means dividing or classify your email subscribers as belonging to certain subgroups as part of the main whole.
Here, at CyberDream Developers, we not only provide website development but online marketing services as well.
Online marketing can be Facebook and other social media marketing, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns, or even email marketing.
We can segment our list so that our subscribers, you in this instance, can get all the email marketing news you want without being bothered with PPC campaign optimization tips or Social Media Marketing strategies if you’re not interested.
This raises the value of each email you receive from us and makes each message more personal. This can only be massive for email return.
Speaking of message personalization let us move on to point 3.
No. 3 Personalize Each Message
Remember we said that email marketing is supposed to help you build a relationship with subscribers so they know you, love you, and trust you enough to do business with you?
I also mentioned that the better the relationship you share with your subscribers the more likely it is they will open and read your emails and do business with you.
This means you will make more money from your list when you have a better relationship with them.
To personalize each mail you only need to do a few things like:
- Send out emails that include their subscribed names
- Emailing them only relevant and useful content – segmentation
- Send happy birthday deals and emails (if you run the type of business where asking for their birthdays would be ok – hint, hint e-commerce store owners)
- Sending out welcome emails with helpful ‘starter’ content to new subscribers that’ll warm them up to your email list culture. What is email list culture you might ask?
I’m happy you did. That is our next point
No. 4 Build A Culture And Brand
Culture, brand, identity, Unique Value Proposition (UVP) – call it whatever you want to make you feel like quite the learned marketer and strategist.
All I want to ensure is that you build a reputation for being all the good things – helpful, thoughtful, resourceful, value-packed, trustworthy, educational, familiar, etc.
Build up the reputation of proving awesome, value-packed emails that help your subscribers on their journey to solving the problems they need to be solved.
Do this by only offering the best possible value at all times.
Stick to the schedule you have, and never forget that they are your tribe and a tribe always looks to the leader for direction and safety.
No. 5 Offer Massive Value
We will not spend too much time here because we have already discussed 7 tips to provide massive value to your email audience in your email content that will help build a positive relationship with your subscribers.
This positive relationship will prove beneficial to your income.
To learn more about how to achieve this just scroll up to the previous section above where we discuss this.
No. 6 Stick To A Schedule
There has been much debate about how often to send your email subscribers some new info.
After all, you don’t want to be flagged as spam or seem overbearing. Fret not! You’re worried for nothing.
Let me ask; when was the last time you got annoyed by someone sending you a few helpful tips each day to solve your problems and make your life easier in some way?
Matter of fact, do you have anyone in your life who checks in each day to provide that kind of value to you without expecting anything in return?
That is the point of these questions – this is a rare and probably absent person in our lives. They just don’t exist and we really wouldn’t mind it if they did.
That is the answer to your problem – be that and more to your email subscribers. A few short lines at a consistent time each day and week to bring them further away from pain and closer to happiness.
By publishing consistently and predictable you will have better interactions as they will know when to expect to hear from you.
If you’re providing massive value then they certainly won’t mind hearing from you.
No. 7 Offer An Incentive To Sign Up
We must take a quick step back and look back at our signup process.
As we discussed at the start of the article email marketing helps to build trust with your audience so they can get to the point where they love and trust you enough to hand over their hard-earned cash.
After all, there are too many scams online to just mindlessly enter credit card information on a website you’ve just come across.
One way to help them get here is by offering something of massive value in return for their email addresses. The item must be something worth paying for and relevant to their issues.
It must be something that they would love to have even at a price be it a marketing strategy for business owners, a free eBook, some video training course, or any other material they’d find helpful.
By giving them free information that helps them they will also feel obligated to give you something in return and if your free material helps then certainly the paid stuff is even better.
I can see them begging you to take their money already.
No. 8 Vary Your Email Content
We discussed that it’s not entirely harmful to email your list 3 or more times each week.
In fact, as long as it’s helpful they’ll welcome your daily or tri-weekly visits to their inboxes.
Now, we must also discuss the fact that you don’t want to bore them with the same tried and true, rinse and repeat bland content that you always give – mix it up a bit and keep things fresh and entertaining.
Make it count as an adventure that takes them on a journey away from pain and closer to success every time they see you send something over.
Predictable is boring. Boring kills conversions.
No. 9 Add Calls To Action
Now that you’re doing all the right things and sending emails to your subscribers that are welcomed and even desired it might do you well to start interacting with your subscribers.
You might think that your job is done by sending over the information. That is not at all true.
In fact, the loop of communication has only just been opened and started.
What you need to do next is to strike up a conversation on what was discussed in the form of a call to action. Your call to action (CTA)is a prompt that tells them what to do.
It can be a button that asks them to buy a product, sign up to your webinar, or check out your landing page. It can also be a simple as asking them for their experience, thoughts, or feedback on the matter you just mailed them about.
It should strike up a response in them which is more interactive than having them read and leave.
No. 10 Sell At The Right Times, Provide Value At Others
I like to send commercial emails, i.e emails where I ask for an economic investment) 10% or 20% of the time.
The reason is two-fold:
- My primary goal in email is to nurture a relationship that will build trust and establish me as the trusted expert in the field.
With this established, I will be sought out to offer my services and products to my subscribers. - I want to offer helpful information to my subscribers that help them learn more about their problems and possible fixes.
The more they know about these issues the more they will trust me and the more likely they are to respond positively to my one or two sales emails.
By using this schedule they will not feel targeted or exploited when I do ask for them to make a purchase every now and then.
No. 11 Send Emails On The Weekends
Well, if you think about it personally and logically it makes sense, doesn’t it?
We all check email on the weekends to ‘see if anything interesting came in’ although we know good and well that not even tumbleweed has rolled by since we left Friday evening before work ended.
But you know what?
It feels good to think that something might be there to keep me distracted for a few minutes from doing chores.
Maybe just maybe you can be that entertaining, exciting, and distracting thing that your subscribers look for on a weekend.
Besides, with being away from the demand and commitment of work what better time could there be to send over a One-Time-Offer (OTO) with a massive discount for amazing value that won’t last the entire weekend?
No. 12 Optimize For Mobile
Most emails are being read on mobile, most purchases are initiated on mobile, everyone has their smartphones glued to them, and everyone loves being offered amazing value and help for their problems.
Very helpful insight if you are looking to make the best of your email list.
Make it easy for your subscribers and make sure you optimize for mobile at all times.
No. 13 Split Test Everything!
Before we get started on this point let us briefly discuss what split-testing is.
Split-testing refers to changing one key metric in your marketing campaigns while keeping the same metric constant in another version of the same campaign.
After doing this change you send out the two versions, one with the change and the other without the change, to your email list and track the results.
An example is split-testing the subject of your email by sending out two different headers to a small segment of your subscriber list.
Once you get the result it will tell you which subject has the higher open rate.
This would be the winner of the split test and would be the header you use to send out to the rest of your list.
By split-testing, you will know what works and what doesn’t and will be able to send out emails with the highest chance of success.
No. 14 Setup Unique Dedicated Landing Pages For Each Offer
This is marketing 101 and goes beyond email marketing.
When sending traffic to an offer using any kind of campaign, whether email or Google and Facebook PPC, you should always send your traffic to a uniquely designed and crafted landing page that will speak to your offer personally.
Having a dedicated landing page is proven to always positively impact your conversion.
Do you doubt it? Maybe you should run a split test and find out.
No. 15 Make It Easy To Read
When you send out your emails you should make them as easy as possible to read.
That does not only mean to use simple and easy-to-understand words that a 6th grader could understand but also make the paragraphs small and bite-size.
This will make it easier to ‘scan’ your content and pick out the most important information faster.
Additionally, by using small paragraphs your readers will find it more welcoming to read because it looks so much easier.
Large paragraphs are daunting and can bore many readers. Make your paragraphs small and bite-size.
